If the tumor is so low (within the rectum - beyond the colon) the rectum has to be taken as well. I'm sure that was discusses as part of her "informed consent" when she was told about the surgery.
"And, if, at time of surgery, we find that the tumor is too far down the colon, then we will have to resect the rectum as well. Do you understand?"
Surgery has gotten a lot better in sparing the rectum in these far-distal cancers, but sometimes it's unavoidable if you want to save the patient.
I worked with a (world-renowned) vascular surgeon who had an APR back in 1973. When I left the university in 1989, he was still cancer-free.
