        One of the reasons that Russia was capable of launching an unprovoked attack on a nation that offered it no threat was that the Russian people had never had to confront the atrocities carried out by the USSR.

        That is so true.

        I agree, a most interesting article.

          The author is Daniel Hannah, a former member of the European Parliament. He was quite critical of the organization, iirc.

            Yes, it was an interesting article, but would have liked his thoughts.

            Should be be like after The World War 1 and show no mercy? Of be like after The World War 2 and help rebuild the defeated?

              Likely neither one. Russia is not going to be defeated in anything like the same way Germany was. In any probable scenario the regime only slightly changes. Russia is not suddenly going to toe the international law line and is unlikely to have the cash to pay reparations.

              If something less probable occurs we might have an opportunity to encourage a partner nation, but I seriously doubt it.

                What interesting times (yeah, Chinese curse). The first thing that should be imposed is restitution for the damage that's been done to Ukraine. That just is simple fairness.

                Now, as to actual punishment, well...

                  We can demand all we want. They will tell us to pound sand and we won’t invade Russia to enforce it.

                    @Mik

                    Correct.

                    Best case scenario is Russia retreats back to its 2014 borders and signs a conditional armistice with Ukraine. All the conditions of course resting on Ukrainian shoulders.

                    Not saying that is likely to happen.

                    In any event, Russia should not be pursued beyond the Ukrainian border. Russians fight badly in other people’s countries. Not so badly when when they are defending the motherland.

                      True. Any reparations would come from Russian assets custodied abroad.
