Honestly such questions are well within the purview of public health.

Yes. And so are myriad other questions that don't get asked and answered because the answers would be politically inconvenient.

Nonsense. The political affiliation of fatalities has no medical value whatsoever

        Public Health /= Medical.

Social influences on acceptance of vaccines or NPIs or any intervention is very much a worthy topic and it predates covid.

The public health people deal with the health of populations not individuals.

@jon-nyc makes good points here. The study of a population, and the diseases they get versus another population is a worthwhile investigation.

Look at the studies comparing the entrance of hypertension and obesity in black versus non-black populations.

The colleagues of these academics were coming out with courageous stands about the public health concerns of racism overriding the public health concerns of large BLM gatherings. That is the larger context in which all of this science is practiced, and there isn't a single person listed on that paper who wouldn't sacrifice their science to that context. As it happens, this was a paper that answered a question that they were allowed to think clearly about. Good for them.

What kind of ghoul would even undertake such a study?

NATIONAL BUREAU OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH (NBER)

              Jacob Wallace
              Yale School of Public Health
Department of Health Policy and Management

              Jason L. Schwartz
              Yale School of Public Health

              Paul Goldsmith-Pinkham
Yale School of Management and NBER

Seriously, the authors and their affiliations are listed in the paper, page 2.

That still doesn’t answer Mik’s question. What type of Ghouls are Messers Wallace, Schwartz, and Goldsmith-Pinkham (guy with hyphenated last name :eyeroll:)? Their names and qualifications don’t really answer that question.

For instance: Mik may have also asked “What type of idiot would post this study?” And I may have answered “Axtremus”, but that doesn’t address the main point of Mik’s question, what type of idiot is Axtremus? Is he an imbecile, an ignoramus, a fool, a simpleton, dullard, or nitwit? That’s what we need to find out.

              I hope that helps!

Sure it does. Public health researchers and economists study this type of questions. Given the names and affiliations of the authors, you can also look further into their body of work to get a better sense of what they have been studying/researching, how this work fits in the context of what they have been studying/researching, why they choose to study research this question now. (If you’re the “follow the money” type, you can lookup who may be funding/commissioning the study/research. But in this case you wouldn’t need to because the authors disclosed the source of funding right on the first page.)

What might be more fun, is to follow the blacks

South has more. Big cities have more. Did COVID have a racial disparity in mortality and if so, why?

I believe that's been studied, and the answer is yes.

Why? Because diabetes, obesity, poor nutrition, education racism.

A lot of those red states have hefty black populations. Does the mortality disparity skew results?

No, the study looks at registered Republicans and registered Democrats as individuals, not grouping by state.

                          Why?

I know that public health officials do a lot of work in third world countries, determining which groups are more likely to get vaccines (in these cases, stuff like polio, etc) and how it breaks down along religion, tribe, etc.
