Being the philistine I am, I never noticed that there was one way or another on the Union
JackFlag.The US flag is always positioned with the star field facing forward on aircraft.

The only reason I know is because it was drilled into our brains in cub scouts. In order to be invested you had to know how to dress, hoist and lower the Union Jack and the Canadian Red Ensign (the precursor to the present day Canadian flag).

In the UK, flying the flag upside down can be considered an insult, even if it was an honest mistake...
...and the person claiming to be insulted is a bit of a tosser
