The Race To The Clouds
-
Doesn't this look like fun?
Hillclimbing is a sport of motorsport discipline, where drivers race on an uphill course in a time trial format, where each car navigates the entire course alone against a clock. The objective is to complete the course as fast as possible. The driver that completes the course in the fastest time is declared the winner.
The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, considered the greatest challenge in motorsports for both man and machine, is known as "The Race to the Clouds".

Since I've whetted your appetite to learn more about the Pikes Peak gig:
"Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a yearly race to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado. The event once started in 1916 and is still happening nowadays, driven by different types of vehicles.
"Even though the race is ‘only’ 20kms long, the amount of turns (156) and the differences in height (a difference of about 3000m) make it a true battle of attrition. Recently, in 2018, the fastest record has been set on less than 8 minutes (7:57 to be precise). The speed in the turns, climbing up the mountain and the short amount of time in which they do this make it a fascinating sport to watch!"

One of my dad's brothers competed at the national level for motorcycle hill climbing. He was filmed in the movie "On Any Sunday" having a terrible and hilarious climb at the Widowmaker Hill Climb in Utah. No trophies for him that year.
During those years of competition, he was very skinny, and he never was very tall. During one of his climbs, he broke his leg while almost to the top of the hill. The ambulance crew on standby was stymied about how they could get to him and carry him down on a stretcher.
His wife was having none of that hemming and hawing. Thus, his ego also suffered damage. His wife ran up the path beside the climb area, picked him up and carried him down the hill to the waiting ambulance.
She was a very tall and muscular farm gal who grew up working just as hard as her brothers throwing hay bales, etc. She was physically stronger than her husband, and quite muscular. She carried him like a child in her arms, and carefully brought him down the hill. The crowd was clapping and laughing. His broken leg was bad, but not as bad as his injured ego.
