I think that statistics show that vaccinated people are less likely to get sick, and if they get sick, less likely to be hospitalized, and if they get hospitalized, less likely to die.

We shouldn't. As I said upstream in this thread, science and knowledge changes. We (generic we) need to change with it.
However, in my opinion, it is something that is very difficult for public figures (for example, politicians) to either A)admit they were wrong or B)just change their mind when new information comes in
