Cutdown Day
-
"The Buccaneers cut wide receiver Jerreth Sterns, guard Sadarius Hutcherson, edge rusher Andre Anthony, cornerback Kyler McMichael and safety Chris Cooper.
"The most surprising seems to be Sterns, an undrafted rookie out of Western Kentucky who led the nation in catches, yards and touchdowns last year."

As far as Sterns, there's a world of difference between Conference USA and the NFL.

Yeah . . . This is the first I've heard of Cutdown Day; never heard of these Bucs, so no opinion. The concept of a cutdown day seems cruel; but I guess you'd have a good idea if you were gonna be cut, and better to get the news on a designated day than to get blindsided out of the blue.

Nature of the business. They got their shot. The good ones will likely get picked up by another team.

It’s not that it’s a designated day to cut players, but at 4:00 every team needs to be at 53… But they hold on as long as possible in making those cuts, making the unofficial “cutdown day”
It’s unusual for an undrafted free agent to make a team, so your WR isn’t really a surprise. If personnel guys thought he would make the cut he would’ve been drafted.
That being said, Pittsburgh picked up a diamond in the rough in Jaylen Warren, a running back that is likely going to be our #2 and I think could push for the #1 spot. The kid is hungry and a wrecking ball with the rock. As an aside, he is cousins with Willie Parker, an undrafted back for the Steelers that eventually became our #1 and to this day holds the record for the longest touchdown run in Super Bowl History.
Another undrafted free agent for the Steelers holds the record for the longest (and probably greatest) play in Super Bowl history…

There's some buzz in New Orleans. They know him from the year he spent on their practice squad.
Maybe something, maybe nothing.

He’ll land somewhere. Quite frankly, I’m a little surprised he didn’t stick with us, but we’re running light on o-line to give the roster spot to skill guys that are going onto IR. If he clears waivers I won’t be surprised to see him land on our practice squad.

And I’m not surprised. He was our first add to the practice squad. Now we wait to see if their IR moves will open space to put him back on the roster…

Guys will be cut and go on the waiver wire. If they aren't picked up by another team (I think in 24 hours) they are eligible for the practice squad. The practice squad has (I think) ten spots for guys that are rookies or have just a couple of years of experience.

@Jolly It’s 16 this year, I believe.

Fifteen or sixteen, I disremember. Only five or six slots are for veterans (although I don't remember where the line is between younger and older players).

Not cutdown news, but bad enough. "Center Robert Hainsey suffered an ankle injury . . . Hainsey was supposed to be taking over for Ryan Jensen, who is out due to a serious knee injury. (In my noobie opinion, the worst injury news since Godwin). If Hainsey can't play, that would mean that the Bucs would be down to their third-string center . . . Basically, the Buccaneers are running out of offensive linemen."
