A dirndl is a traditional dress worn in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and other regions of Europe, based on the historical costume of Alpine peasants.

    No, it's not.

It's primarily worn in Bavaria and a few parts of Austria. Germany isn't Bavaria. In fact, according to many, Bavaria isn't even really a part of Germany.

You've commented on how many Germans look down on Bavaria before. Care to elaborate why?

Do they feel the same about Austria?

      Bavaria is prettier.

Bavaria has historically been separate from Prussia, and even until today, Bavaria thinks it is "special" or should even be split off from Germany. One small example: One of our major parties, CDU, exists everywhere except in Bavaria. They have their own brand of CDU called CSU.

With regard to Americans, I'm sometimes annoyed that due to the somewhat random fact that the US sector after WW2 comprised Bavaria, many Americans think that all of Germany is like Bavaria. Not even Bavaria is like the American stereotype of it.

Plus the Bavarians are mostly papists traditionally. Like Austria in that regard. The rest of Germany is far more Protestant, again traditionally.

And from what I understand, they speak German about as badly as Americans, too.

It seems that every country has the bit that thinks it is separate. The US has Texas. Canada has Quebec, and apparently Germany has Bavaria. Britain has Yorkshire, oh and Scotland. Also, Wales, Cornwall, parts of Northern Ireland.....actually, come to think of it, they all just want London to fuck off.

                  I was only joking

We said that, too, a couple hundred years ago. Just sayin'.

That's not quite accurate. Bavaria has parts that are overwhelmingly Protestant, and the rest of Germany has large regions that are overwhelmingly Catholic.
