So the preseason is a time for not trying that hard? Or do players have a psychological acceptance that eh, it's the preseason, no need to work that hard?
That's not a criticism; it kind of makes sense, given how rough the regular season is. Kind of stretching out the kinks and gearing up for the big stuff. That's okay.
Is that the correct way to view the preseason?

I agree with Cats that Brady is abandoning his team, due to his abnormally low honor and virtue as a human being. It's really sad. I remember the old saying - how do you know it's a day where Tom Brady betrays everything and everybody he claims to love? It's a day ending in "Y". That's not only a funny joke, it's also true. ALL days end in Y - every single one of them. And Tom Brady betrays everybody who trusts him and depends on him, every single day.

I was joking. I like to call Tom Brady the essence of evil. Saying you agree with someone then taking it to an absurd extreme is also a joke, though not to everybody's taste. I got that from what Adam Carolla would sometimes do to Dr Drew on Loveline. Good times. I was riffing, in a totally hilarious manner, and including you in the joke. I hope you don't mind. Many laughters were generated and happy times caused. Fun fun happy times abundant feelings, yummy sushi opening soon.
Education is extremely important.

Not really...Guys are playing as hard as they can. Some over-play and try too hard.
The pre-season is for some starters who need reps (offensive line and secondarys), a lot of position battles - especially 2's vs. 3's, but sometimes a starting spot - and guys on the bubble of making/not making the team. It's also a time to decide on practice squad players.
Lastly, the tape is not just for your team, it's for other teams. Taysom Hill is a shining example...The Saints were actually looking at tape on another player in Green bay's preseason, when they noticed Hill. The Packers put him on waivers and tried to sneak him onto the practice squad and the Saints snapped him up. Now, he makes $10M/year.
