I'll give Ms. Lin a great deal on a Yamaha Silent Series...
Nurse? Bet she works a shift and the piano lessons are occurring at a time when she is trying to sleep...

Kathryn Pugh,
a 39-year-old registered nurse, who is white, was arrested for allegedly firing several gunshots into the apartment of her neighbor, Pin Hsin Lin,over piano noise in Arcadia, California, who is Asian, on Aug. 1.Fixed it for them. It's like I have to do all the work anymore.

Do many piano teachers actually teach with the “silent” function engaged?

@Axtremus That’s up to them, but they could if they wanted, there are 2 headphone jacks…
I would be curious to know if the apartment building had a restriction against pianos? Many do… I would have to think that this had been brought up to building management sometime before

Many buildings restrict piano playing to certain times. I knew of a person who moved into a condo with his model B Steinway only to find that the condo code preluded ANY playing of piano. He had to get special permission to even have it tuned on an annual basis. I regarded the person as a bit //insert nice word for "stupid"// for not investigating that before acquiring the condo.

My condo's declaration has no such restriction. That's a good thing.
Also, the builder went to great pains to make it pretty soundproof. When I play, it can be heard in the hallway, but my neighbors hear nothing, unless they're sitting with an ear to the wall that we share.

I had a friend with a condo at 680 Lake Shore Drive. You could toss grenades in your living room and the people on the floors below or above wouldn't hear anything - maybe a light muffled sound outside the door. They had a Treasure Island Grocery on the first floor along with a pharmacy, dry cleaner and travel agent. It seemed like a perfect building to me.

That building's address used to be 666 Lake Shore Drive. I used to park there.
Also, it had the Gold Star Sardine Bar...
Sinatra, Barber, Bennett.
