I love YouTube. I watch streaming professional chess on it, motor racing highlights and commentary, stuff about computer games, British TV comedy shows, and so on. All the content that I can't easily get elsewhere.

I'd never, ever use it for political stuff. There is more than enough of that shit elsewhere. I'd be very happy if they went to Truth Social, or bigandbouncy.com, or wherever they like.

If they don't adequately reward the people who create the content, or allow them to rewarded elsewhere, obviously it's not likely to be sustainable.

My main complaint about YouTube is that the commercials are getting more and more frequent and invasive.

    I was only joking

You all know about Adam Mosseri and the absolute dumpster fire over on Instagram, right? Exact same issue.

IG is pumping out features that you have to use to grow on the platform. If you aren't making reels regularly, your updates get buried. But hilariously, playing their game also won't save you. Reach is way, WAY down for everyone, because they're starting to follow the TikTok model for the explore page. You have your choice between being watched by randos who won't subscribe and will never see you again after your viral vidro, or speaking to a tenth of your built audience. A whole lot of people have spent years growing their following on IG, only to have no way of ever reaching that audience again.

Reach is way down on YT, too.

Say what you want about Musk, but his complaint about bots is somewhat legit. Of all the total profiles on Instagram (or Twitter, or Facebook, or YouTube), how many of them are active, and how do they define "active user" to their ad buyers? As soon as ad buyers figure out there's a disconnect, there's going to be a reckoning.

IG just started with theirs. It was amazing to see. They're trolling Mosseri on freaking Twitter about it, and the petition to roll back the updates is likely going to hit 500,000 signatures in a day or so.

      Please love yourself.

That sucks that every platform wants to be TikTok

They’ll end up, after a lot of drama, with the same formula they use every time they have a trifecta: take away health care and food assistance from low income families and use the money to fund tax cuts for their donors.

It's natural, unfortunately. We've gotten very, very good at hacking attention, to the point where we'll create apps that make us do things that are bad for us. But the attention draw works, and that's what these platforms are made for.

Yeah, but why the shorts? The guy in the original YouTube has over a million subs, but they are literally forcing him to do something that takes time, creative effort, something he does not get paid for.

The company can't be satisfied with a million sub channel?

It's not about that, unfortunately. It's about mirroring TikTok. This is for two reasons:

                1. What jon said.
                2. They know the TikTok model is more addictive. Which means more time on the platform. Which they can sell to ad buyers.

YouTube's position on content creators right now, is, literally: "go somewhere else if you don't like it, fuckers." And they're right for the time being. But a lot of creators have already started making moves. Not good ones, but just wait until something else gets figured out. Mass exodus.

                Please love yourself.

You might not need to be (though being daughter-less I don't really know). I can share that my stupid impenetrably mysterious and fucking impossible new phone rang -- vibrated, buzzed, moaned, whatever the hell it does -- with periodic posts from some people from Tiktok, in incomplete snippets and invitations to join Tiktok, which of course I did not do, even if I knew how. With lots of effort I finally figured out how to make them go away.

Anyway, to get to the point, the snippets seemed designed perfectly for silly-headed teenage girls, no offense, and not containing anything remotely serious in nature. Mostly boys n' stuff. I don't see your daughter becoming warped in any way.

Yeah, I go there from time to time. He's entertaining.

My favourite analysis site is Daniel King's Powerplaychess. There's a ton of games there, and Danny King is a pretty good analyst. Ironically (considering he works for Chessbase) I think he relies on the computer a bit less than Agadmator does.
