The defendant was an illegal immigrant.

That didn't make it into the story.

      Oh, he also wasn't named.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify victims of sexual assault and, for now, is not naming the suspect to avoid inadvertently identifying the girl.

          Yup. Mother's boyfriend, supposedly.

That USA Today article names the accused as well as reports on his immigration status: "... Immigration and Customs Enforcement had filed an immigration detainer warrant. That warrant, which The Dispatch has confirmed was filed by ICE, would prevent Fuentes from being released from custody, even if he were to post bond."

Why do you think "the defendant was an illegal immigrant" is an important fact in this case? Would you rather have different abortion access policies for a 10 year old rape victim based on whether her rapist is an American citizen, a legal immigrant, or an illegal immigrant?

I believe the point is that "unimportant facts" are trumpeted as integral to stories if and only if the "unimportant fact" supports a politically desirable narrative. But then I suspect you know that.

The suspicions were reasonable, but nobody dug in, and it turns out the situation is real. So? It's not like you predicted anything that proved to be right.

Yeah, because if he hadn't been in this country, this poor girl would not have been raped.

Remember "absolute moral authority?" Remember "If it even saves ONE life?"

                    Yeah.

                    What about preventing ONE rape?

I think you read about the suspicions that a lot of people had that this was a single-source, unverified story, and it ain't like the Left (Russia!) ever lied for political game.
