A/V capture

I have a bunch of Hi-8 videos that I'd like to digitize. My computer which has thunderbolt ports does not recognize the camcorder (a Sony). Apparently, my camcorder is not on the list of "compatible" devices.
So, I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive way to digitize the video.
Services, such as ScanCafe are great for photos, but for video, they're very expensive, between $10 and $30 a tape. I had them do a VHS a few years ago, and the results were sketchy - tracking was off, etc.
So, I'm considering something like this gizmo.
Any thoughts?

@George-K I did that to a lot of analog movies. I will try and find exactly what I used. Something similar to what you show, but a bit more bulkier, almost the size of a hard drive.
Once I got the hang of it, it worked quite well.
