Nephew walked the Appalachian Trail.
He had a blast...

@jolly that would be very cool. I have read a couple of "trail diaries" of people who did it. Seems like a lot of fun.
On a depressing note, read the following article. About a quite experienced hiker who went unprepared on a winter hike. Ended up not making it. Interesting but quite sad also.
Found his diary (both written and video) documenting his failure of life.

Couple of ways to do it. He started in the early spring in Georgia and hiked to Maine.
What was funny, was that after he got back home, he couldn't sleep in a bed. He slept on the floor of his bedroom for most of two weeks.

Another trail that is way out of my league, but there are people who have done it in a pretty continuous hike. Took them at least 1.5 years. Probably fun to do parts.
28000 km/15000 miles trans- Canada trail
Not making it to Arctic Circle Trail this summer for sure. Not sure when/if it will happen.
For @George-K and @mark there what looks like a cool continuous trail that covers Wisconsin. The Ice Age Trail That one looks definitely "doable".

I have ridden my bike on part of the Ice Age Trail. The entrance is about 12 miles or so from home.

Another trail that is in the making.
From Wash DC to Wash state. 3700 miles.
The preferred route of the Great American Rail-Trail connects 150+ existing rail-trails, greenways and other multiuse paths spanning more than 3,700 miles. These trails are hosting the Great American through their communities, making possible this grand vision of a nation connected by trails. And with more than 55% of the route already on the ground, now is the time to experience the Great American Rail-Trail!
Probably be another 10 years or so till it is finished.
