Our elderly neighbour came by and told us about this bill. Apparently, a preacher at her church had told her that it was going to allow the government to come into their homes and forcible test them for Covid, and then take away anybody, including children, who test positive.
All very hilarious and everything, but this poor lady lost her husband a couple of months ago, as well as her grandson a couple of years ago, and she's terrified.
We tried to explain that this was bogus, but I don't feel that she was convinced. She seemed to get the most comfort from the fact that it would be against the US Constitution, whatever the Democrats want to do.
What I really want to know is which freaking eejit decided on the number of the bill?

Take comfort that you are not a caregiver or police officer that have to hear stories like this all day long. Mental health issues are more the rule than the exception yet we all act shocked when we see it. Talk to her about her other fears that have nothing to do with politics, tell us the whole story.

I don't think she has mental health issues. She's really a very nice lady, and she relies very much on her church for emotional and other support. We try and help with her gardening and what-not, but the church is giving her a lot of help. TBH, I don't know whether it was a preacher who told her this, or just somebody at the church. The church seems a little 'out there' by British standards, at least, but I think they're good people.
I see her reaction in much the same way as I saw my dad's reaction to people coming to the door asking for donations. As he got older, he became less able to distinguish between genuine charities and the less genuine variety. I'd go as far as to say that genuine charities knocking on doors asking the very elderly for money gets pretty questionable, but that's another issue.
