The devil is in the details. My cousin is retired Canadian Army. I will ask him, but I think I know what he will say.
But unit cohesion, and the assimilation of the individual into the unit are, IMO, good and necessary. I do not believe you can reduce this and maintain the same strength.

Don’t think it is that big a deal and I agree with Mik, the devil is in the details. Still, I am old school and relaxing of regs governing length of men’s hair, display of jewelry and visibility of tattoos bothers me some.
When I served as a Reservist back in the eighties hair length was prescribed and vigorously enforced. To comply I was in the barber’s chair every two weeks. Only rings permitted were wedding bands and other jewelry was limited to a wrist watch and, if desired, an out of view necklace with a “regimental chaplain approved” religious symbol. Tattoos of any sort, while permitted, could not be visible while in work or dress uniform. The latter was an irritant to inked soldiers in summer as it often prevented them from being able to wear summer duty short sleeve work shirts - although some regimental C. O’s we’re inclined to relax that policy from time to time.

I read it. The culture of the military will determine what is and what is not acceptable. As well, you can be rest assured there will be a lot left to an individual CO’s discretion as to how his or her regiment presents itself. Above all else, practical considerations and individual Regimental traditions will govern, not pop culture.
