I was in a "diversity" meeting a few years ago, where two high school students were offering input to district administrators. You know, the idiotic "what do black kids think" as if one kid speaks for all.
Anyway, as uncomfortable as it was, I asked them both to clarify for me, is it correct to say African-American, or Black?
One student stated he was of Caribbean descent, so was insulted if he were to be referred to as African-American.
The other student, of course, stated that she was offended if referred to as being black, because she was African-American.
So the answer is: You Can't Win.
But, you can always be wrong. -
I was watching a Psychologist, big black guy, thoughtful, intelligent and liked him a lot. On about how as a 6'6" bloke people would cross the street, move their handbag to the side away from him. Very interesting chap and was wearing a 'Nah' teashirt, referring to the 1955 Rosa Parks incident.
He kept saying "Black and brown people..."
