"You're not 3 guys in a shed."

Don't know if it's true or not (googling not helpful), but if not, it deserves to be.

If it’s your tax money getting spent by the military acquiring firearms, you’d hope that the military do a better job at vetting their prospective suppliers. Not saying that the military should not pick the best rifle design just because the design came from a very small business (“3 guys in a shed”), but they should do that with their eyes open knowing that they will be sourcing firearms from a very small business.
No way something like this happens today with modern RFI/RFP practices.

AI rifles are hand-built and hand-fitted. They are not mass production type rifles. The company was started by an Olympic gold medalist and the designers of the rifle. Notable is the short box magazine they use, while still retaining the stiffness of the action.
Nobody gives a damn if they're made by three guys in a shed. Governments only care A)If they meet the requirements, B) Can they outperform the competition and C) Can the company meet the production goals.
This sale was made about a decade ago, IIRC. Apparently, they've done well.

BTW, the M40 the Marines used until very recently, was a production Remington 700, that was then gone over with a fine tooth comb by the best armorers at Quantico. That's not a huge operation. Maybe a bit more than three guys, but it ain't over six that get their hands on those rifles.
We fought with those from Vietnam to Iraq. I had a friend (now deceased) that had sixteen confirmed kills with his.
