Portugal anyone?

Looking for beach town recommendations.
I want good sized waves, but on a beach for swimmers, not surfers. When I google around for good waves, I get (of course) surfing beaches. Some of those would be fine, but some of those are too dangerous for a 13 year old boy to body surf in because of all the surfers. Another problem is that sometimes the best surfing areas have shitty, rocky beaches.
It's hard to search for "great waves but swimmer friendly".
Anyone have any advice?

This website opens with these words:
You’re a beginner and all you want to know is when and where to surf. So, what are the best surf conditions for beginners?
I don't know if Portugal is mentioned, but the info may be useful.

As far as I know the only real reason to go to Portugal is to drink vintage tawny port
But googling drinking port and surfing did not garner any useful information.

I think we’re going to base at Ericeira for a while which has a nice beach and is an easy drive to sights in Sintra.
Afterwards we’ll probably go up to Nazaré for a night or two. That is where this was taken:
Now, those waves are winter waves. And exceptional ones at that. Also there’s a beach south of that that is unaffected by the particular geological features that create those monsters. So we can have safe body surfing while still seeing where the pros go.
We’ll wrap up with a couple days in Lisbon.
I’m pretty psyched.

@jon-nyc I have no idea about the Sintra environment, but if you intend going southwards (Algarve), almost every praia would be worth trying.
