Maybe the real problem is access to money to buy these things.
For a long time, easy access to credit has left too many people believing they're richer than they are. They have things like cars, pets, hobbies, new drapes . . .
Thinking of the average bear, how many of those things could he afford if he had to pay cash on the barrelhead?
Not saying credit is a bad thing. Without it, we'd have the living standard of Romania, probably. But it is enabling us to feel better off than we really are. That's when we get notions.

Funny you should say that...
The wife and I had to take the grandkids to a friend of my daughter's. The friend and her husband are currently separated. She lives in a nice house, not a McMansion, but nice. Probably about 2200sqft with the typical 8/12 roof you see nowadays. Their home and most of those around it, are fifteen to twenty-five years old. The couple have two children and are in their mid-30's, probably been married ten years. She has about two years college, with no degree. His degree is in computer something or another, and he works for a contractor that is employed by the U.S. government, doing some type of IT security work around the world, primarily in the ME, Africa and South America.
Right across the main road from the entrance to their subdivision, is another, older subdivision, most homes built in the 80's.I recognize the first home in the older subdivision well, since the guy who built it, borrowed my plans. My original home, before I added on to it, is around 1600 sqft, or just maybe 20sqft over that. In my day, that was considered a normal sized, middle-class, brick veneer home. And we still had some tight months to pay that $400/month note.
I don't see how many people own a home today, especially with the toys I see parked in the carport or behind the house. I know these people can't be paying cash for this stuff.
