Just curious if anyone has ever learnt these square and cube root methods in school. I don’t think I have.

The square root of 11.56 doesn't require some tricky algorithm. Just the recognition that it'll be between 3 and 4, with one decimal digit of either 4 or 6. That leaves either 3.4 or 3.6. No tricks required, just simple insights that you would expect a numerate problem solver to understand.
