I saw this on a FB group I follow.
This photo is from 1954.
"U505 German submarine about to cross Lake Shore Drive to become an exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, 1954. It was outdoors for decades and thousands of kids on field trips got to not only see it but also go inside it and touch things. They moved it indoors in 2004."

I visited it more than once in the early 90s.

It is a very cool exhibit. Fascinating to walk through it.

That exhibit features interestingly in this book
The diver used the exhibit in Chicago to memorize the setup of a u boat to insure his safety while diving the wreck.
