I'll name names and point fingers...Homesteading Today was a big homesteading and rural life site. It is now a much less visited site. A lot of that has to do with poor moderation that was very uneven, and a cabal of people who used the Like, Dislike and Report buttons as their private screening mechanism. If a poster they wanted to move on write anything they remotely disagreed with, there was suddenly the rebuttals, ten Dislikes and four or five Reports.
It spun off four boards that I am aware of, with a subsequent mass exodus.
Then, a funny thing happened...New owners clamped down a little on the idiot cabal. With a little less tolerance for foolishness and a lot less people to argue with, a lot of the wolf pack left and have not come back. The site still hasn't recovered, though.

Right. Those features work on platforms like Reddit, where tens of thousands of randos are checking a feed written by people they don't know and will never speak with again. It's good for separating the wheat from the chaff.
There's no chaff here. Well okay jon talk some shit from time to time but I still want to see what he says, along with everyone else. What we say should have equal weight.

The whole point of a forum is communication between individuals. Voting and likes and all that is not truly communicating. Got something to share? Say it.
Exactly! Why would we (as long term friends/family) want to hide behind such a device?

I think of Sully landing in the Hudson River, the epitome of excellent communication
Just one word
"Unable"

I'm fine, thanks
I like fewer words
A simple single digit is even better
Nobody is hiding if you can see who used +1/-1
Why prevent others from using it? What's the big deal?
How is +1/-1 not truly communicating?
Of course it is communicating.
brevity is the soul of wit
