      Very simple design 🙂

      Maximum aperture f8? Hmm...

I can picture you shooting with a true large format camera 🙂

        Eh, I'm no Gregory Crewdson.

I am going through a view camera course at the moment, though, to see if it's something I want to mess with. So many terms and techniques, it's like starting over.

        Please love yourself.

          So, a few things.

          1. There's a massive amount of play on the film spool. So I cut off a side of the box the film came in, and shoved it beside the spool to seat it better. Worked like a charm.
          2. The holga is notorious for light leaks. So I wrapped all four sides with electrical tape to prevent this.
          3. There really is no shutter speed or aperture. Shutter speed is kinda 1/100. More or less. Depending on what your own personal model's spring does. And reports indicate that the only difference between the f/8 and f/11 settings is that you get maybe, under certain conditions, some slight vignetting. So basically you use film whose rated ISO matches the light conditions of the day (usually 400) and you leave the rest to the Almighty.
          4. The 4 distance "settings" on the lens are also polite suggestions.

tl;dr: As a camera, this thing is well and truly a total piece of shit. As a plastic box, hey, it takes photos! Cool! And you can get some interesting effects sometimes, so we'll see. Mailing in my first roll tomorrow.

          Please love yourself.

I just saw one on eBay for $40. Yeah.

            Oh, shipping is $28.

B&H is charging $60 for a new one.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

Yep! To be fair, that's the whole point of them, though.

Ah, from what I understand, a view camera allows the same things (and presumably more) like a tilt shift lens, which can be used for all kinds of effects.

Yeah, MANY more options. But it's a complicated process.

What do you guys think of mirrorless digital SLR cameras?

They're a bit better than DSLRs but either take fine images.

                      1. Same sensor technology, although most companies now (outside of Nikon) are putting their R&D into mirrorless.
                      2. Digital viewfinders give you more information than an optical, which is what you normally get with a DSLR. True opticals can't give you a live histogram, focus peaking or highlight readings, and digitals can.
                      3. A lot of mirrorless cameras are lighter enough to be noticeable.
                      4. The downside is the battery life, but that's becoming a moot point.

The only reason to have a DSLR rather than a mirrorless is if you've already invested too much in DSLR glass for the upgrade to be worth it. Which it wouldn't be. That's why Nikon came out with a new DSLR on its standard mount system right before the olympics: the market was professionals in exactly that situation.

                      Please love yourself.
