Looking at Laptop Computers...

Apple is not in the running. Just saying. I was thinking about getting a laptop with a max budget of $3k But then I saw something that is making me take notice...

@Klaus yes on both counts. I don't need much for battery life. And I don't travel very often. It would mainly be used for software development and 3D CAD, DAW, Photo and Video processing, and Games of course.

My towers are all downstairs in the bunker basement and this would be my upstairs/dining room table/couch/recliner workstation as well as the main computer for the soon to be, recording studio control room.

I tried similar setups for photo/video stuff. The problem for me is that sometimes I need the control panels to be pretty small in comparison to the stuff I'm working on, and sometimes I need them to take up most of the space. A setup like this kind of prevents you from doing so.

lol I do know how you are, because I'm like that too. Just not nearly to the same extent.

So for example, I use Lightroom for my photo editing. I don't do crazy compositing and I'm not big on messing around with textures, multiple layers, etc. But I do want to see what local adjustments do to the overall image, so I keep the image size big and the adjustment panels small.

With something like After Effects, though, it's all about the timeline. So for me, that takes up an assload of space.

So for me, it really depends on what I'm doing how big I need the preview vs. the control panels. I hate two monitors, though, I just use one bigass one and call it a day.

Then it sounds like a good choice.

For me, computing power is largely irrelevant. Any modern computer is good enough. But I do care about size, weight, battery time, and reliability.

I've been a long-time Thinkpad X series user, and would still buy them if I could get one with OS X. I'll consider a Thinkpad with Ubuntu next time, if Apple gets on my nerves too much.
