Bruce Willis has been cranking out movies at a crazy rate over the last couple of years, though you might not be totally aware considering where they are ultimately landing. And while it’s not weird for an actor to take as much work as possible to get while the getting is good, there is a new theory about why he’s decided to venture into this kind of obscure film work. According to OK! and some other sources, there is increasing speculation that Bruce Willis has dementia and is allegedly suffering from some early onset memory loss issues; working diligently now while he still can. This has not been confirmed by sources close to Willis.
That's one way to do it. Contrast with Brahms who set fire to his substandard work rather than let it pollute his catalogue.
Maybe Bruce was in it for the experience of being a movie star in a trailer. If reports of his on-set parties are any indication, that may be the case.

Would one with aphasia still be able to read and write, read lips (visual as opposed to aural), or be able to communicate via sign language? Would an actor with such an affliction make a sufficiently compelling play for deaf/mute characters in movies and TV?

Totally unpredictable. Aphasia is a spectrum. Also whether it's receptive or expressive makes a difference. Imagine hearing a question, and not being able so speak the response. Or, not understanding a word that someone says, but you can talk.
It all depends on whether Broca's area or Wernicke's area is affected, and how seriously.

Bruce Willis was having cognitive issues on the set of his recent films, and was unable to remember his lines before his family stepped in “to take care of him,” a source told Page Six.
On Wednesday, Willis’ family announced that the star has been diagnosed with aphasia and will step away from his decades-long career.
There was buzz last year that Willis was having issues on productions dating back to 2020 when the busy former “Pulp Fiction” star was making a string of mostly B action movies with titles such as “American Siege,” “Survive the Game,” “Cosmic Sin” and “Hard Kill.”
A source told Page Six of the 67-year-old star: “He was having cognitive problems, they all knew Bruce was having problems.”
The insider added, “Everybody knew, the cast and crew. His family has stepped in, they moved in to take care of him.”

There have been a number of signs over the last 10 years. That scares the hell out of me…

Wow. That is sad. He was quite popular for a while.
A sickness like that is probably harder for the people around him, than it is for him.
@George-K Does the sickness effect only communication, or also the ability of the brain to think?

Mostly just communication, though if the damage is severe, of course it can affect cognition. Broca's and Wernicke's areas are close enough to the frontal lobe that a tumor, or trauma could affect thinking.
However, usually it's just communication, which is terribly frustrating for these patients.
