Big Boy
-
Went to have lunch with D2 up in Cheddarland yesterday. She was all excited because Big Boy opened a restaurant just about 2 miles from her home.
Though the main menu says "breakfast served all day," and I could have enjoyed an omelet, no breakfast was on the menu at our location. Sigh.
So, I went ahead and ordered "The Best Cheeseburger on the Planet."
Wow. I don't think I've ever had a worse, overpriced burger. The lettuce was soggy, the patty was overcooked and crumbled out of the bun, the cheese was tepid, and the bottom of the bun fell apart as I was eating it.
What. A. Mess.
The restaurant itself looked like a run-down place that BigBoy bought and "refurbished." The floor around the bar was all scratched up from years of stools being moved over it, the pleather material on the seats was cheap, and despite the 50" TVs mounted on the wall, the whole place looked like a poor attempt to rehabilitate a sad restaurant/bar from the late 1970s.
Blecch...

I might be wrong, but I think around here what used to be called Big Boys was called Shoney's Big Boy. When i was a kid all the Shoney's Big Boys had that big kid holding up a hamburger statue out front. Later on they dropped the "Big Boy" part and began going just by Shoney's. They apparently sold the statues because I've seen a couple of them in people's yards.
Shoney's is hit or miss. They're mostly an all you can eat buffet, and very inconsistent from one location to another. There's one about 45 minutes from me that's excellent. The rest just so so, with one so nasty I won't even go inside.

There used to be one on the way to work called "Bob's Big Boy." Yeah it had that kid with a burger statue. Never went in however.

Sounds like "Big Boy" is a brand that tries to individualize by location or by owner. "Hit or miss" is a problem, and one of the reasons that Macdonalds, Burger King, etc are so successful. Yeah, it might not be the best food, but you know EXACTLY what you're going to get, and how good/bad it will be. Consistency is a good thing in the food business.
(Which is why I don't eat seafood in restaurants. "You know, it has to be prepared correctly," is an excuse that doesn't work for me.)
