It is imperative that Ukraine retake and hold Kherson. It will cut off the Russians from taking Odesa and denying the Ukrainians access to the Black Sea. It will also be a political victory since the region is primarily Russian speaking.

Last week Amnesty International published a report that sparked outrage from Kyiv over Ukrainian troops using civilians and civilian infrastructure as shields and military base points to fight the Russians. Here is a summary of the report and and reaction:
Yesterday, one of my Ukrainian diaspora associates emailed to me this rebuttal to the AI report. I know it’s a blog but it is nevertheless, well presented. If nothing else it shows what the Ukrainian defenders are up against in defending their country from the Russian invaders:

Been following this since yesterday. There are some indications, albeit unconfirmed, that this may have been Ukrainian partisan action. Given the apparent extent of the attack I have my doubts although the Russian reaction downplaying the results of the attack lend some credence to the partisan claim. If true I wonder if Crimean Tatars were also involved?

I've read that as well. However, others have questioned it, because of the three, almost simultaneous explosions/strikes.
It might be more complicated than "partisans."
Also, I've read that these bases were a major staging ground for the Russian offensive in the Donbas and other regions. If that's the case, well, perhaps the Russians might have sustained a major blow.
On another note, the British Ministry of Defence is saying that "recruitment" into the Russian army is reaching higher, perhaps more desperate levels. Russia is opening recruitment to men under the age of 50, and there's no need for graduation from a middle school education. Some sources have claimed 80K casualties (KIA and wounded). If that's the case, then, Putin's entry into Ukraine really re-defines "meat grinder."

Not sure if that is a good comparison. Despite arguments to the contrary, Hess was totally crackers and by then quite out of the loop.

It can also be disinformation. Until I see actions other than hearsay and innuendo, I will treat it as disinformation.

I take most things I read about the war, at least the ones favorable to Ukraine, with a hopeful grain of salt. As a counter, I try to imagine what the Russian press put out when we were in Iraq.

A huge explosion rocked a Russian ammunition depot on the occupied Crimean Peninsula on Tuesday morning, delivering another embarrassing blow to Moscow’s forces a week after blasts at a Russian air base in the same region destroyed several fighter jets.
A senior Ukrainian official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the operation, said that an elite Ukrainian military unit operating behind enemy lines was responsible for the explosion, which sent up a huge fireball. Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that the explosion was an “act of sabotage,” according to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.
The apparent attacks this month, which used covert forces behind enemy lines, underscore the inventiveness of Ukraine’s forces. Since the war began, they have adopted unconventional tactics in the hopes of leveling the playing field while trying to repel attacks from a much larger and better equipped Russian military.
After illegally annexing Crimea in 2014, the Kremlin turned the peninsula into a heavily fortified military zone that Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin, often describes as hallowed ground.
Since Mr. Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February, Crimea has served as a key base of operations. Aircraft at Crimean bases have flown sorties over Ukraine, and ships of the Black Sea fleet based there have launched punishing rocket attacks on Ukrainian military positions and civilian neighborhoods.
Until this month, Crimea appeared well protected from Ukrainian attacks. Even Ukraine’s most advanced weapons systems do not have the range to hit Russian military targets there, and its planes are incapable of making it through Russia’s air defenses on the peninsula.
Then, last Tuesday, a series of powerful explosions ripped through the Saki air base in western Crimea, annihilating a good portion of the Black Sea fleet’s 43rd naval aviation regiment.
