Off the top of my head I’m thinking of 8 Ukrainians who came to YYC during this war. All but 2 speak, read, write fluent English. Very well educated, they take on minimum wage jobs .. they are diligent, quick, efficient. I remember the 2 brand new refugees who helped my son move. They were hired by a Ukrainian Canadian who owns a moving company. Complete with their cell phones, google maps and a translation app they figured out my kid’s IKEA and wifi situation, sourced out the location for the needed IKEA part, went above and beyond setting up his furniture and equipment. They didn’t have to do that. Those 2 boys were really strong, and had a treadmill unloaded and down a narrow L-shaped stairwell in minutes. The girls & mothers I know (1 whom I’ve friended) all have good educations. I’ve volunteered anything I can do to help them with their permanent residency applications. Ukrainians are darn good people, smart, industrious and make for the best citizens. Canada (prairie people especially) knew this long before this recent war. I grew up alongside many Ukrainians. We’d love to have more of them as teachers, doctors, nurses, tech people.

      @blondie

Our son works part time in a local grocery store. At least a half dozen of his coworkers are young Ukrainian women who are here under temporary work visas for Ukrainian war refugees. They are all intelligent, polite, hard working and above all appreciative of the unwavering support Canada gives their nation its just struggle against tyranny.

A senior exec that I work with (Ukrainian guy, still has a thick accent) - regularly personally flies with medical equipment and drives into Ukraine to deliver it. He lives here in Seattle. Good, brave people.

Guys, this is old news. January 28th or so, there was an EO basically halting all of the renewals and extensions for the TPS and Refugee programs. This was primarily aimed at those feline feasting Haitians in Springfield and Charleroi, along with the Venezuelan gang members hiding among the legitimate refugees. There are alternative methods to deal with the individual requests for asylum, they just aren’t doing blanket renewals like the prior administration.

This is a journalism instance of malicious implementation.

The EO directed DHS to end all the specialized parole programs. This is the implementation. Had they wished to limit it to Haiti and Venezuela they could have chosen that route instead.

In fairness, the administration has recently said no decision has been made, so maybe they’ll still back off this one.

Appears that Trump may have sent his headhunters to Ukraine in search of potential Quislings for president but found none:

Ex-President Petro Poroshenko's team works "publicly and transparently" with U.S. partners to ensure bipartisan support for Ukraine, Poroshenko said on March 6, reiterating his opposition to elections during the war.

His comments came in reaction to Politico's article, which claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump's team has been leading secret talks with Poroshenko and another opposition leader, Yuliia Tymoshenko, as Washington ramps up pressure against President Volodymyr Zelensky.

                  https://kyivindependent.com/poroshenko-tymoshenko-reaffirm-opposition-to-elections-under-martial-law-after-claims-of-us-contacts/

They may now have to go to Moscow for recommendations on the Kremlin’s preferred candidates for the job.

About Ukrainian immigrants going to Canada, it may be a win-win.

Just seems to me with Canada's large habitable landmass and its very low fertility rate of only 1.33, Canada really can use more people.

Ukrainian culture is deeply interwoven into
many parts of urban and rural Western Canada. It is in fact, become part the Canadian identity. Ukrainian immigration is always welcomed here and as you point out, we have plenty of hospitable empty space - space that resembles their Ukrainian homeland. Much greater than even Alaska! Imagine that,eh ?

Donald Trump says he's considering new sanctions and tariffs on Russia, following a wave of overnight strikes on Ukraine.
He writes: "Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely 'pounding' Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED.

"To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!"

OMG, a strongly worded Tweet from a twat that ends with a meaningless one line zinger. Pathetic. Like a parent telling little kids to get to bed or get a licking. Surely Putin is shitting bricks in abject fear now.

How about flipping the intelligence sharing switch back on, Donald? Why do you think more sanctions would work after you yourself said they don’t work against Putin? Tariffs? The US buys next to nothing from Russia. What would tariffs accomplish? The US can only tariff what it imports.

@xenon Thanks for the paywall-avoiding link. That's the first piece I think I've ever read that gave more words to a steel-manning of the opposing viewpoint than to the rebuttal.

I am unfamiliar in the public discourse with the version of the opposition that he is referring to. It's not coming from the white house, or the Daily Wire, or Megyn Kelly, or Fox News, or VDH. Well, Trump did call Zelensky a dictator once, which he later refused to acknowledge when asked about it.

Wittingly or otherwise, the MAGA online right started to absorb Russia’s narrative on Ukraine: that it isn’t a real country, that the Ukrainians aren’t a real people, that if they are a real people then they are uniquely corrupt. On and on it went: that Ukrainian soldiers are ‘literal’ Nazis, that Zelensky is constantly buying villas and yachts in the south of France, that the whole war is one big money-laundering operation, that Ukraine’s war to push the Russians back is unwinnable because of the great might of the Russian army – and that the whole thing is a giant waste of US taxpayers’ money.

Of course, almost all the allegations the MAGA right make against Ukraine are infinitely truer of Putin’s Russia. Interested in international corruption? Try looking at Putin and his friends. Interested in an anti-Christian government? How about looking to the cynical faith of Putin, who trumpets Christian values while firing rockets at great cathedrals like that in Odessa and recruiting jihadists to fight for him. Think Ukraine is cruel in forcing draft-dodgers into the army? Consider Putin’s army recruitment processes. Dislike Zelensky for not holding an election during a total war? Have you noticed Putin’s electoral habits?

By this stage Ukraine is not just a country that the MAGA right has never visited. It is a fantasy country that they imagine they know everything about – and all of it is bad.

Perhaps they will manage to wade their way out of the memes. Or perhaps they will find out the hard way that most of the American public may dislike woke, but they dislike dictators too – and that it is possible to keep both these dislikes inside one head, and movement, at the same time.

                              Education is extremely important.

As usual, Douglas Murray nails it. Wish I had seen it last year. All the same though it is just as fresh today as was when it was published .

I find it hilarious that people refer to MAGA this and MAGA that.

                                      It shows that :

                                      A. You don't know Trump voters very well.
                                      B. His take on conservatives and Ukraine is pretty stupid. But, who am I to argue? 😄
