A friend who pilots 747s for a living just facebooked these pictures of what he called "speed tape", also known as duct tape.
This is a Mesa airplane, he was a passenger when he took this, not a big confidence builder.

In WW2, 100mph tape was also known as Duck Tape, because of the cotton duck backing.
The real name was duct tape, and it was commonly used for fast and dirty aircraft repairs.
