Putin has his work cut out for him if he wants a spot in the Pantheon.

I remember an NPR interview several years ago with a TDS suffering climate scientist who said, with a straight and very solemn face, that Trump would go down as history's greatest mass murderer due to his inaction on climate change and the effects that will have on humanity.

I have a copy of Conquest’s book and have read it through at least twice. I cannot even begin to count the number times I have consulted it over the years.
It is an excellent monograph on the Great Terror that took place over the course of 1937 and 1938. It was written during the height of the Cold War, a time when Western historians had zero access to Soviet archives. Conquest’s estimates only reflect those two years not the Russian Civil War in the 1920s, collectivization, the WWII period or its aftermath.
Since the fall of the USSR until quite recently historians including those from the West have enjoyed access to numerous previously closed archives. Material from them would suggest that Conquest’s estimate of 20 million is actually on the high side for the Terror period. Therefore, I would tend to rely more on the current historiography of the likes of Stephen Kotkin, Robert Service, Timothy Snyder and others who have accessed the archives in the course of their research for a more accurate account and narrative on the subject of Stalin’s crimes.

That is totally unhinged.
