An Iranian man was left unable to urinate and in need of skin graft surgery after getting an AA battery lodged in his penis.
The 49-year-old patient, who has not been named, went to hospital in Tehran in April 2021, where he told doctors the object had been stuck for 24 hours.
Medics were able to prise the battery out without surgery and discharge the man on the same day — but he was forced to return months later in pain.
During his second hospital stint in September, he revealed he had been suffering a burning sensation when urinating and was unable to achieve a full stream of urine.
Scans revealed 'severe and progressive' scarring to his urethra, partially blocking the tube that carries urine and semen through the penis.
Doctors were unsure what exactly had caused the damage but it may have been due to toxic materials in the battery.
They also did not reveal how the device came to be inside his penis, but they suggested a number of possible reasons including sexual pleasure, contraception or a drunken accident.
The man had no history of mental illness, they added.

True story...
In 1990, I was called in one evening to give anesthesia for a "foreign body removal."
That almost always means that some guy "fell" onto a dildo and he can't get it out of his ass. Though I have seen stranger things (like the guy who put a piece of electrical conduit, about 2 cm long onto his penis and couldn't get it off because of the swelling), this one took the cake.
A middle-aged Iranian woman presented to the ER with vaginal discharge. The ER docs quickly ascertained the cause of the discharge and they couldn't remove the object because it had been there so long.
So, when we brought her up to the OR, the gynecologist, with no small amount of effort, was able to remove a very leaky D-Cell battery from her vagina. It had leaked, and the acid and chemicals irritated her vaginal mucosa, causing it to become adherent to the tissue. No way that was coming out without some serious dissection. Took about an hour.
I never found out why it was there in the first place (though someone said it was because her husband wanted to punish her, which I don't understand).
Probably one of my weirdest. I still remember the time, and the room in which we did that case.

Woman’s ‘UTI’ was actually glass tumbler lodged in bladder for 4 years
A woman who doctors thought had a UTI actually had a glass tumbler stuck in her bladder for four years.
The 45-year-old had come to the hospital complaining of typical lower UTI (urinary tract infection) symptoms, such as leaking.
But doctors were left stunned when scans revealed there was a glass inside her bladder.
It was encased by an 8cm-wide (3-inch-wide) bladder stone, which are normally so small they are hard to see with the naked eye.
The woman, from Tunisia, revealed she had used the drinking glass as a sex toy a number of years before.
Evidently, she had inserted it into the urethra — the hole from which females urinate — rather than the vagina.
Her case was published in a medical journal, including the astonishing scan and an image of the glass and bladder stone.
