Stop me if you've heard this one... A family decides to drive across a significant portion of the US to visit a famous amusement park, stopping to visit family in the boonies along the way... Hilarious hijinks ensue...

The family (read Karla and Lucas overrode Dad) decided to drive down to Universal Orlando in May with a 1 day stop outside of Chatanooga to visit Karla's brother and sister, and a 1 day stop in Centre, Alabama to visit her dad on the way down. We will be leaving Centre on a Sunday and checking in at Universal on Monday, so I was thinking of getting a hotel somewhere along the gulf on Sunday evening that would only leave a 2 hour drive or so Monday morning. Any suggestions for towns that would make for a nice afternoon/evening visit in that area?

Got me. Most of the Gulf stuff that I'm familiar with is too far away.

If you were coming down from Chatanooga or from Virginia, I'd hit Cumberland Island.
If you haven't been there, put it on your bucket list.
