A show on AMC about a mid-19th century expedition to find a passage across the Arctic. Two ships, HMS "Erebus" and HMS "Terror" attempt the crossing.
Stars Claran Hinds and Jared Harris (love these guys).
What I thought would be an adventure (on the likes of "Shackleton") ends up being a horror story with monsters, ghosts, and crap.
Watched 1 ½ episodes. Great production values and good acting.
Story? Crap.
Don't waste your time.

Does the book have scary monsters, etc, or is it pretty much straight-up fiction?

Well not scary monsters in the cartoonish sense. More connected with Inuit folklore, in the same sense that the yeti is an expression of Nepalese folklore. And experiencing life in the arctic. Also you learn a tremendous amount about the Franklin expedition which is a true story.
I enjoyed the book very much. Dan Simmons writes very well. -
So I started watching the Terror, and apologies to George but I really like it.
Also It’s funny to see the same actor in a different series roles. I mean, I know actors do lots of movie roles, but I guess in a short time I’ve watched the crown, the expanse and now the terror, and see the same guy , Jared Harris, playing King Edward, Anderson Dawes of the OPA and captain of the Terror, Crozier. And also the guy who plays Commandeer Fitzsimmons is also Phillip the Duke of Edinburgh in the crown. It’s as if these series all use the same acting pool.
Anyway, interesting look at ship life in the 19th century, and it does give a feel for what Shackleton went through, with the ships ice bound through the long dark arctic night. Relentless cold. 19 century surgery and medicine. Good stuff.

@bachophile I really enjoyed the concept (Shackleton, after all), and Harris is a great actor (Chernobyl, too, btw).
I'll give it another shot, based on your recommendations - once I finish "Vampire Interview."

OK - 6 episodes in, and I'm done.
I have to acknowledge the really high production values and concept of being ice-bound in the arctic, in the mid 19th century. The discipline and logistics of such a long, long ordeal are well-portrayed.
Sorry, but I find the wandering storylines distracting: the "monster," the Inuit woman, the lead poisoning, the alcoholism of Crozier, the utterly confusing names, and muttered dialog. Gimme Shackleton.
