        I remember reading the book.

        It was in 1973, and I was staying in Long Island visiting my (first) wife before we married. Great story.

        I'd forgotten so many of the details of the story other than the overall plot - good cop goes after corrupt cops.

        I also remember is was the first time I saw the word "scumbag" used - with a definition.

          @george-k ill one up on you, i remember Serpico and the Knapp commission.
          at the time i was a 7th grader in new york city and even then remarkably addicted to current events and news stories.
