According to police, McNeil had been arrested five times before the deadly encounter and was on probation after being convicted on a felony drug charge in New York City in 2003.
McNeil was arrested four times outside the city on various charges, including assault on an officer and weapon possession.
Sources tell CBS2 McNeil also has a history of posting anti-police and anti-government messages on social media.
In the wake of the shooting, the mayor again pledged to attack the gun violence crisis in New York City and go after the gun dealers.
“Officers have taken thousands of guns off the streets, but they need help. The help is to stop the flow, and that is what the federal government must do,” Adams said.
The man accused of killing one NYPD officer and critically wounding another blamed his mother for being blind in one eye and raged with her over wild anti-government conspiracy theories before she called police for help, law enforcement sources told The Post Saturday.
Lashawn McNeil, 47, became more entrenched in the conspiracies — even believing he was god and no one could tell him what to do — after moving to New York City in November to help care for a disabled brother, sources said.
He also frequently clashed with his mom, Shirley Sourzes, over issues as mundane as lost house keys for their Harlem apartment, a neighbor said.
When the mom called 911 Friday night she told the operator her son “has problems,” sources said.
Shortly after three officers arrived, McNeil allegedly ambushed them when they tried to enter a back bedroom, shooting dead rookie cop Jason Rivera, 22, and critically wounded Officer Wilbert Mora, 27, with a stolen Glock 45 pistol equipped with a high capacity ammunition magazine.
On one of his Facebook pages, McNeil posted “Stop eating McDonald’s you’re eating human children mainly people of color” in response to a video about blood sacrifices at the restaurant.
One video he linked to in 2014 espoused the ideology behind “Moorish sovereign citizens,” a group that does not recognize the US government and has been called a hate group. Members of the group were involved in a stand off with police in Massachusetts in July.
