But it’s a Winter of Death!

I would have thought that the time to relax regarding Covid isn't when everybody gets sick of it, but when the infection rates come down. Everybody getting sick it was always going to happen, but I rather suspect the virus doesn't care what we think about it.
If we're heading into another wave, telling everybody not to worry seems a tad reckless even for the NY Post.
" I confess that in the early days, I was a COVID hawk."
You know, I somewhat doubt that.

It's not an all or nothing approach. We are not locked down, but we also don't go into crowded places and we eat at restaurants at off hours. We are starting to wear masks again in grocery stores and the like, but 90% of the time I do curbside pickup anyway. I won't fly or take other public transportation, but then I generally don't anyway. For family gatherings we get tested beforehand.
You can pretty much live your life. Just use common sense and take a few easy precautions. The virus isn't going to come looking for you.
As far as students, leave that up to the school district. Make the decisions at the lowest llevel possible. Let it reflect community thinking.

Yeah, that's pretty much what we're doing. We're getting on with it, but we're not travelling to the UK over Christmas. My kids have small get-togethers with their friends. I go into the office 2 days a week. But I'm still cautious.

People here have widely ignored any mandates, including masks and gathering sizes, starting after the first couple of spikes. Older people do mask, but I rarely see anybody south of their sixties do so.
What I haven't seen, is the vaccine snobbery you see some places, one way or another. You want to get vaccinated, good for you and I (common I) applaud your choice. Don't want to get vaccinated, fine by me (common me), too. Individuals decide where and how they want to intermingle with other people.
School kids in most districts are unmasked. Yeah, we've had a teacher die and a few get pretty durn sick, but for the most part, things have worked out pretty well...

It’s time to abolish ‘emergency’ COVID-19 powers
My question about the emergency right in the beginning was, ok, when will it end?
The answer at the time was, when we flatten the curve.
Then, for a while it seemed like the answer might be, when we reach 80% vaxed.
I think the answer now is never. What kind of a reckless madman would even ask such a question?

No, hospitalization and death rates. At least if/as the virus becomes less lethal, which seems like has happened.
By the way, that's how the Spanish flu went away, it got far less lethal and people just sort of moved on.
