It’s for the boy to own his buddies in whatever the fuck games they play.

    Only non-witches get due process.

It might be in the other thread, so I missed it what with all of Mark's gloating. What components did you ultimately get?

      CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 5800x
GPU - Evga GeForce RTX 3070
      Motherboard- Asus X570-Pro
      SSD - Samsung NVMe M.2 SSD 980
      RAM - TridentZ RGB DDR4 32GB
      LianLi AIO 360 liquid cooler
      Seasonic GX-850 power supply

So, using the cheapest case, you're in for about $1200.

Add a monitor and you could've gotten an iMa....

      Just yanking your chain.

I get it, why it might be fun, etc....

@george-k I didn’t add it all up but I’m in for somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500.

I went to NewEgg and plugged in your purchases.

Of course, keyboard, mouse and monitor will add cash.

I'm not, by any means criticizing your decision to do this. Hell, I bought a PC about 15 years ago, just to "play" with it - I installed Linux, by the way.

If you're a Windows guy, it's probably a reasonable amount to pay for a mid-range PC, though I'll defer to others for that judgment.

But for less, you could have gotten a Mac...

I really don't want to derail this, but a similarly equipped MacMini would cost about $1300 plus mouse, monitor and keyboard.

If you're interested in gaming, etc, probably not a bad deal!

I have a Mac. This is for the boy.

By the way, the boy also has a Mac. And a Chromebook.

I know, and I believe that's what you use most of the time.

            This is for the boy.

I know that as well. It's a fun project, and you're a good dad for engaging him in it.

By the way, the boy also has a Mac. And a Chromebook.

Which does he use most of the time, and which Mac? Why?

He uses the PC mostly and the chromebook for school. He got a used MacBook Air last week for the hell of it.

Well, it was a hard-to-spell-Jewish-holiday gift but he wanted it for the hell of it.

Macs are not optimal for gaming and only have one option for VR.

I wasn't aware of any, tbh.

and only have one option for VR.

                  So far...

They'll probably establish their own (proprietary) system for doing that in 2-3 years, right?

Have you heard of any plans for that? Seems like a "too little, too late" kind of thing, unless they have something game changing to show us.

Yes, Macs are a bad idea for gamers. The only Mac that might work for games is a Mac Pro with Windows on it. But that’s a little absurd.

                        Questions around bench test…

1). Can I do it without the cooling system installed? The motherboard instructions say not to install liquid cooling systems until it’s in the case and I want to do the bench test out of the case (obviously)

2). Motherboard instructions have me install gpu after the motherboard is in the case. I need to do it outside the case first if I want to do a bench test. If I temporarily attach the gpu to the motherboard, can I easily get it off?

The video card alone would have set you back $1200 on NewEgg. It's like trying to find rocking-horse poo.

I bought pretty much the same PC, but with Intel processor, as a pre-built, and it cost me about $2000, although I saved $100 in the sale.

                            I was only joking
