    What do you do if somebody gave you a bunch of bank notes of very high denomination (500 Euro) that basically no shop accepts as payment, while at the same time you couldn't go to a bank with that money? Hypothetically speaking, of course.

      "Couldn't go to a bank with it" sure does put a crimp in one's plans doesn't it. Other options of deploying the money would probably vary between illegal and unsafe.

          Cross the border to Switzerland, exchange them at a Swiss bank for USD.

          Keep the cash for spending money on your next trip to the US.
