      I couldn't do anything like that, but I can't understand how somebody could put that much talent and work into something so ephemeral.

          Mostly it's because they get more out of the doing of it than the end result. It's like folks who say, "all that work for a Thanksgiving meal that people devour in 15 minutes." But that doesn't matter to the ones who actually like to cook, it's the process and achievement that's fun, not how long it lasts.
