If you're going to fight a battle, fight to win. Otherwise, don't fight it at all.

Sherman taught school in the closest town (actually he was the superintendent). He knew Southerners. He liked Southerners.
Sherman knew the only way to defeat the South, was to destroy any means it had of feeding itself and waging war.
