The casting for this one is remarkably better than 1984, as is the look.

I watched a bit less than half today and am enjoying it. But it's been so long since I read the book that I don't remember so much.

Oh. Yes.
Just loved it. It's faithful to the story, and in 2 ½ hours it never slowed down, at least for me. The storytelling was clear, and I think for those who haven't read the book(s), it's easy enough to follow what's going on.
Favorite scenes - When the Reverend Mother has Paul's hand in the box. The actor playing Paul does a great job of showing horrible pain, even as the director chose to not show what's really going on in the box.
The arrival on Arrakis. Blowing sand, blinding sun - they set the tone for the environment in which the Atreides have arrived.
The spice harvester - great CGI, and well-paced. And, of course, the worm.
When Dr. Hinds leaves to return to the seitch, she stands at the top of a dune, with hooks in each hand, preparing to ride.
And, for @bachophile ....

Hope it’s better than foundation
And I’m not sure how I remember how I imagined her. But I wanted to share some bodily water, that’s for sure.

Oh, yes. It's really good. But, tbh, could it be any worse?
And, as I said, almost 100% faithful to the book. Some stuff is omitted, and Dr. Hinds becomes a black woman.
Lady Jessica is the hawt, too.
This guy "Quinn" has put up tons of ideas on Dune, the books, etc.
Here's his review:

Wait, this is on HBO Max? Hmmmm… Woold this be better on the big screen, though?

Yes and yes.
I just watched it on the small screen and my first thought was that I should have watched it in the big.
The visuals and score are fantastic.
Great flick

Just watched it. Best movie I’ve seen in ages. I read the book about 35 years ago but still remember it really well, which I guess says something. I need to read it again.

Next thing I saw she was playing the titular character and also the “executive producer” of her own series with Disney in “KC Under Cover”. Then she moved onto the big screen playing “MJ”, SpiderMan/Peter Parker’s love interest, in the Marvel movies. I sort of look at her like the female version of Will Smith.

Go to that YouTube channel I mentioned (Quinn's Ideas). He's kind of a Dune freak and there are several good summaries of the book(s) to get you up to speed if you've forgotten some of the story.
Still, I think the movie stands alone pretty well.

@george-k This is the odd thing, I remember pretty much the whole story, all the names and terminology etc. I think the world really got under my skin in a way that only Tolkien had previously.

Excellent. From the books, I never got the "connection" between Luke and Duncan. The movie portrays that pretty well.

Really? I thought that would be one of the worst castings in history…

Agreed. But he came off pretty good. It’s a small role in the movie, though, and it worked. Look at the trailer, and you’ll get the idea. There’s really not much more of the character other than his encounter with the Sardoukar in the movie.
I was disappointed to not see more of Thufir and Pieter, however. The Dr. Yueh story was painfully abbreviated as well.

I never read the books or saw any of the movies. You guys have me wanting to get a 30 day trial of HBO Max to see this.

I can't get Bautista as the lovable goof from Guardians of the Galaxy out of my head when I see him. So, I never bought him as the evil guy. Good movie though, looking forward to the second one.
