Unfortunately for the car industry, China is also the world’s primary supplier of magnesium — 85% of the world’s supply comes from the country.
US is a global producer of magnesium as well. As long as American auto plants can get their hands on enough semiconductors, production shouldn’t quite hit a total standstill.
Is the US a global producer? Or do some companies located in the US produce?
China is different.
The US is, of course, better, but don't confuse government controlled means of production with private control.

Thanks for providing this. I was about to hare off and find more info myself, and you saved me the trouble.
If you click on "Annual Publications, Mineral Commodity Summaries, 2021" under the opening para, you'll find an interesting thumbnail on global production of magnesium, also including this:
"The use of magnesium in automobile parts continued to increase as automobile manufacturers sought to decrease
vehicle weight in response to consumer desires for increased fuel efficiency . . . Although some magnesium sheet
applications have been developed for automobiles, these were generally limited to expensive sports cars and luxury
vehicles, automobiles where the higher price of magnesium is not a deterrent to its use." -
