It needs to change. I know several immigrant doctors who are similarly situated. Many of the top ones end up at Rockefeller University doing research.

Yup.

Several of the "surgical assistants" with whom I worked were board-certified docs in their home countries. Not necessarily surgically trained, but that's a skill easily learned (you can teach anyone to retract, cut suture and tie knots). I always felt bad for these (usually Pakistani) guys who were punching way, way, below their weight.

Worked with a Polish lady who had defected from behind the Iron Curtain. She was a pediatrician back home. In America, since she couldn't get her license, she worked as a technical rep for Beckman-Coulter.
