You can do a clean burn with lignite. There's a plant not twenty miles from where I'm sitting and you wouldn't know it was there if not for the transmission towers crossing the interstate.

But it's relatively new, and built with scrubbers and such to purposely burn lignite. I suspect the Chinese aren't as clean with their plants
