I enjoyed the first 3-4 seasons of GoT, but then it got meandering, and silly. Can a prequel save/re-invigorate the franchise?

Not out of new ideas, just recognizing a cash cow when they see one.

I'd find it pretty difficult to work hard if I was 73 years old and had as much money as he does.

Indeed. Once you reach "the number," why bother, other than ego, of course.

I find it pretty difficult to work hard anyway, and I'm only 58 and broke.

He’s been making and breaking promises about that book for 7 years now. That can’t weigh easily on him. I guess by now he’s managed to destroy the part of himself that he was trying to put on the line by making public promises. There is no way he finishes that series.

What he could do, is do the plot outline and then hire a decent writer to "co-write" the books.
