Fuck her 'existence'. I owe her/him/whatever nothing. Nor does anyone else.

The missing are another matter worth considering.

Cats, in your opinion, when you give advice to people about what they should or should not 'worry' about, think about, etc, are you helping them preserve their peace?

Funny, you had a drop-in on that thread between me and Renauda with some pearls about hatred being eternal. I'll tell you what's more eternal. Stupid and crazy.

I'm not perturbed at all. But it is absurd to believe you can choose to be an outlier AND demand that everyone else treat you a certain way because of it. I don't deliberately disrespect the people I meet, but I'm also not going to change my behavior based on their choices.

Personally I could care less about what the Tic Toc woman thinks she is or how she wants to be addressed. As far as I'm concerned she is just another self entitled nobody seeking unwarranted attention.

The only reason I posted was because Trudeau's message caught my eye. Seemed as good a reason as any to contribute to the thread.

As far as Trudeau's message itself .... We are not burning candles in our windows and nor do we plan to burn candles. I don't know anyone who does. I am sure though there are some, although it seems pointless since the issue of missing people is front and centre in the popular press in this country. Has been for several years now. It's not as if folks in this country are unaware of these missing people.

Burning a candle does nothing. If you want to get involved, do so as you are able. But all this feel good crap accomplishes nothing. The HVAC guys just left form out checkup. They were both wearing pink shirts with pink ribbons for breast cancer. We are all aware of breast cancer.

But burning candles is typical Trudeau. He is all about identity politics and only handling one file at a time.

I agree. I have put my name down as a volunteer for assisting in various ways prostate cancer patients. Once this Covid thing has settled down here, there are some seminars planned in which I will be directly involved.

Everybody picks something and participates. That's how things get done. We seem to have lost sight of the fact that a country is the result of the efforts of its citizens, not its government.

So what's the point of all the US flags flying on people's lawns? They achieve nothing. We all know we're in America, there's no point telling everybody.

How about the yellow ribbons for POW's? Again, no point to them. If you care, you need to get yourself out there in a Rambo costume and start rescuing people languishing in foreign camps.

@george-k No, I think Phibes has a point.

During WWII, families would hang a symbol in their windows -- I think it was a star? -- signifying that a family member had fallen in battle. That was a form of communication, both to share the sad news and also to request they not be bothered as they were in mourning. The sign served a purpose.

It may be that putting out symbols nowadays got its start from that custom. But the original purpose is no longer being served. Now it's pointless, as he says. It's cheap patriotism -- you get the credit for waving the flag without having to work for it.

I guess, depending on the culture of the neighborhood, such symbols can function as a support for community cohesion -- "we're in this together".

I remember resenting when GWB decreed the flags could be raised from half mast post 9/11. The thought that flared was, "I'll raise the flag when I fxxking well feel like it, mofo."

Hm, I guess I'm conflicted about this.

                                  Nem mind.

True story - three days ago I had to hurriedly drag my dog away as he attempted to take a dump right on one of those small US flags on somebody's lawn. I was freaking mortified.

And no, I haven't trained him to do it.

I remember resenting when GWB decreed the flags could be raised from half mast post 9/11. The thought that flared was, "I'll raise the flag when I fxxking well feel like it, mofo."

Hm, I guess I'm conflicted about this.

                                      Nem mind.

                                      Holy crap, where to start.

                                      1. Service flags predate WWII. And they're still used today. Drive around.
                                      2. A gold star signifies a fallen family member. A blue star signifies a family member serving in a time of conflict.
                                      3. For the gold stars, they aren't shown to be left alone to mourn. They're to show pride and solidarity in their family members' service to their country. Some mourning families quite obviously ask for privacy but that's not what the stars are for.
                                      4. "Putting out symbols" didn't start with service flags. You're off by a few thousand years.

                                      Please love yourself.

And let's not forget the most patriotic people on earth - car dealers.

                                          I was only joking
