As a young lad, most of the homes in the community were wood siding and almost always white. Ten foot ceilings, built on brick piers, without a lot of insulation. Always, with shade trees.
Cold as a witch's tit in January, but when you only have a few weeks of real winter and months of hot, humid summer, they worked.

Why are the roofs white in Bermuda?
It turns out they are designed this way to harvest rain. The steps slow down heavy rainfall helping the gutters to collect the water and store it in a tank under the house. ... It's still white, because this reflects ultra-violet light from the sun, which also helps to purify the water.
