Have you tried this?

It's kind of a poor-man's VR substitute. I've had one kicking around the house unused for years, and with the acquisition of my new PC I dug it out, and it works! It's a bit overpriced and quirky, but it sure beats using a mouse or joystick hat to look around.

Never used one. Looks interesting. Might have to try it.
There's quite a bit of stuff on YouTube - I was surprised by how well it worked - the big advantage over VR is you can see your keyboard. Obviously, it's not as immersive as the goggles.

Sometimes I get tired of VR headset. Since I built a "wind generator" based on an Arduino, it is much better as it keeps me a lot cooler during a long race. But, it still gets warm around my eyes.
After I recover from a couple of recent "upgrades" I will look into this device. I also want to build a motion rig which will really take the immersion to another level.

I just added this to my Amazon wishlist, the birthday is coming in a few weeks.
You have to be a little patient with it - it's an IR camera, and you use three reflective things on a baseball hat. I found it was picking up the heat source of a light behind me, and kept losing track, but once I switched the light off the problems went away. It takes a bit of jiggling to get it working well, but once you do, it's quite intuitive.

And I wanna purple unicorn that shits chocolate ice cream.
The main reason the device lay dormant in my house for years is that Mrs. Phibes was worried I'd forget and answer the door....
