I learned (a little) about LIMP mode today.

Apparently my car generates selected warning messages that can cause it to go into LIMP mode.

What happens when you go into LIMP mode?

The speed of you car is limited in order to protect the car. In this case I was on a busy road, turning onto another busy mode and every warning light on my dashboard lit up. And all of a sudden, my max speed was around 10-12 MPH. I was turning left and there was opposing traffic coming. I was pushing the accelerator but not increasing RPMs. The warning lights were all on, a bell is ringing and here comes the traffic.

So I limped along for a few hundred feet and into a parking lot. I tried going forward and backward, but the speed just wouldn't come up. Finally I shut the car down and went looking around for some kind of leak, I figured maybe I was leaking oil or transmission fluid or something, but nothing was leaking.

I got back in and started it back up. The only light on now was the 'service engine soon', which indicates a problem with the catalytic converter. And now I was getting OK RPMs. I drove it home at speeds up to 60 MPH, no problem.

So, now I know a little about LIMP mode that apparently is there to protect the car. I'll get it in the shop after the holiday.

A car should never go into LIMP mode for a service issue.

And this is why I don't want a self-driving car.

D4's Jeep Liberty (2015) went into LIMP mode about a year ago. I forget what the issue was, but she had just dropped SIL off at Midway, and she had G2 with her...at 8 AM.
